Why Do I Need a Communication Plan? What’s the Value of Strategic Communication?
The short answer to this question is that strategic communication enables the organization to use communication effectively in support of its long term business objectives.
Communicating in a non-strategic way means creating and disseminating a flood of messages that could be unrelated, disconnected, contradictory, unfocused, with no clear purpose or direction, without a way to measure their effectiveness and results. You could spend a lot of time and money this way without ever knowing whether you are getting any return on your investment. And you can't show others the impact of your communication work.
As a communicator, you can make yourself very busy producing non-strategic communications all day long: publishing newsletters to this or that stake-holder group; producing videos for this or that purpose or event; conducting town meetings on particular issues, sending memos explaining some company positions and not others, sending press releases on company news, producing marketing communication pieces, and so on.
But if not part of an overall strategic communication plan that achieves specific measurable goals at the end of a defined road, all these efforts would be of no lasting value.
More and more, organizations in all forms and sizes, and communicators in different countries and cultures, are choosing to use strategic communications created as a result of a definitive communication plan to give purpose and value to all of their communication efforts. This has been the most significant advance in organizational communication thinking over the past two decades or so.
